"My heart is human. My blood is boiling. My Brain IBM." - Styx, 'Mr. Roboto"

"Ya know," O'Hara began unbidden, speaking to no one in particular.. "I have always wanted t' try a real-time subspace hack on a Borg vessel." She didn't actually look up from her station while she spoke. "Alpha Quadrant comm systems have gotten t' be super borin'. I've neva had enough time t' monitor an analyze Borg subspace Traffic. There's usually a buncha screamin' an' dyin' t' distract a body."

"I highly discourage that", Saren said. "I am studying the ICOS and I think there is a 'feature' that the Borg can exploit if we were to try something like that. I have not had the data to fully test my analysis though."

"It's adorable tha' ya think I dunno how t' isolate a comm relay, Saren." O'Hara shot back. "But perhaps we could save th' snappy banter f'r later? It's na a right now thing anyway, boyo," She wwas still focused on her console. "I'm a little busy keeping th' shields up an' makin' sure we don' turn in t' wee chunks o' tritanium an' meat."

"Then why bring up the topic at this time?" Saren asked while he analyzed various sensor readings coming from the Borg vessel. Although he knew the prudent course of action would be to destroy the Borg vessel, part of him wished they could capture it. The readings coming off of it were indeed unique compared to other Borg vessels.

"I didn' think it was gonna launch a debate in th' middle o' a Borg attack. Live an' learn." Stephanie tapped her comm badge. "Damage Control Team Alpha to Deck 3, Section 20."

Miles snickers, "I'm sorry Saren, but I think you're loosing this battle. What I want to know is, why are they destroying possible 'drones' by blowing up buildings and cities, rather than en masse assimilations...did we find the aggressive Borg they warned us about in school?"

"Every race adapts to stimuli", Saren replies. "The Borg have taken adapting to a level that from a purely scientific view is quite ingenious. That said, a majority of species destroy when they feel threatened in some manner or if they wish to enact vengeance. Without more data, one can only speculate as to the reasoning."

The ship was rocked once by a Borg phaser blast. "Well, unless ya wanna find out first hand, I suggest ya man yer stations an' hush up." Stephanie said. This entire time, She hadn't looked up from her console.

Sav half listened to the banter as she performed orbital evasive maneuvers. As the Merlin was protecting a planet and populace, it couldn't perform high warp maneuvers or even high speed impulse maneuvers. However, the ship was going up and down Z axis besides performing maneuvering thrusters side to side besides the 1/16 impulse speed surges to help make the Borg ship miss its target. That the Borg had only gotten in a couple of shots was a testament to the flying prowess of the Chief Flight Control Officer manning the helm. If anybody was to track the movements, they would have sworn that what was being performed was only able to be done in video games, yet, here, on a real ship in a real scenario, it was being done.

Sav called out, "Sciences, pursue that avenue of adaptation along scientific views. See if it can be exploited by emotive logic. Engineering, work on creating that virtual honeybucket using an aux control computer isolated through a VPN tunnel to control, that would allow us to explore that real time space hack without any repurcussions to the Merlin, except the possible loss of one aux control computer needing slagged by security. Security, post watches at large junctions of hallways in the ship. The borg are logical, the best way to explore a ship is to get to each passageway hub. Captain, any rebuttals or furtherance of orders?"

"Aye." Scarlet said as he continued to split his focus between the tactical display and the security roster readouts. He quickly adjusted some of the locations and groupings based on the reconfiguration of the Merlin before going back solely to his tactical console.

=/\=Sickbay=/\=

The Main Suite of Sickbay quaked and a few items were thrown off of shelves. Those on their feet grabbed hold of whatever was nearby to keep their balance. "Here we go," Cara said to Michael as she got to her feet and headed out of his office. "Everyone ok?" she called out as she walked to the center of the receiving area. Murmurs to the affirmative were heard as Cara helped put things that had fallen back where they were supposed to be.

“The storm has come…” He whispered and smiled at Cara as she left. He took one last swig of his tea and followed her into the central staging area. “Alright ladies and gents. The boys and girls upstairs get their time to shine and now it is ours. Everyone to stations. Any assimilated people or partially assimilated people are to be stabilized and then placed into stasis. It will take time for us to deassimilate them and that will be done case by case. Triage send the red tags to the surgical bay, the surgeons are standing by. Critical cases are to be handled by Dr O’Reilly and myself.” With the bulk of the orders stated Michael placed his comm into his ear, and softened his facial features as he looked at his assembled staff. Some were stoic as he and Cara those that had seen combat, and combat related injuries. Then there were the new transfers who were looking around wide eyed. “Listen everyone remember your training, rely on it, wrap yourself in it and all will be well. On this day because of us the Borg will learn what is meant when we come first to do no harm. Now to stations please. Cara you are with me in the surgical bay.”

In Cara's previous assignments the ACMO would take charge of triage so she had already grabbed a handful of triage tags which she now handed off to the nearest doctor with a shrug. "I guess you are in charge of triage now," she said and fell in behind Michael.

=/\= Bridge =/\=

Saren said, "Aye Commander", in response to her order. The data he had was limited and he might have better luck if one of the survivors on the planet were here. As a Romulan, he did not have as much practical knowledge of the Borg that most long term Starfleet officers did. Romulans had two responses to encounters with the borg. One, avoid them if possible. Two, if a ship was boarded by the borg, self-destruct. Only the Tal'Shiar did much long term study of the Borg and most of that was through indirect methods.

Barstow was about to answer no to Savs question when the deck lurched up under them. On the screen the shields went an emerald green and lit up the forward section of the Bridge. The CO didn't bother calling for evasive maneuvers as Tillatix was already on it, "tactical, return fire!" he ordered, leaving the other orders Sav had called out to be completed.

"On it sir." Scarlet called back as his fingers danced over his console. He finished remodulating the frequency and quickly set the phaser batteries against their opponent. A moment later the side of the Merlin seemed to glow as the full force or her phaser arrays awoke and blasted toward the cube. Scarlet frowned and then continued to remodulate the frequency for the next salvo. "Direct hit sir. Their shields are still holding." The instant he got readings that their shields were down he'd blow them out of space with as many torpedoes as he could fire at once.

Monitoring everything from his station Miles states, "Captain, I may have a way to burn through their shielding, but it might cause damage to the Merlin. I was going to talk to Chief O'Hara about this before we actually ran into any tBorg. We would need to run an additional plasma conduit into our main phaser coupling, which should double the effective output of our phasers, or, it will fry them all and we'd we phaserless ... do you want us to try my idea? It might get them to back off or run off with little more devastation to the Merlin or the planet..."

As the deck rocked under her, Stephanie grabbed the console to keep herself in her seat. "Shields holdin' at seventy seven percent. I wouldn' recommend too many more o' those. If they blow out th' shield emitters, our ace in th' hole won' be worth a damn." She looked over at Saren. "Are ya daft, man? Ya overload th' beam emitters with that much raw power an' it'll take out six decks. If I had a year t' research and redesign th' emitters, maybe... "

"Yes, Lieutenants? What did you have in mind?" Cale said after entering the bridge in the middle of the battle. "Commander Tillatix, prepare to launch fighters. With your permission, Sir..." Cale said after seeing the Barstow glaring at him. He then took his seat the the commander's left side and consulted his console for what was going on outside to bring himself up to speed.

As Cale was second officer, Sav gladly let the command of the vessel fall onto him. She called out, "Yes sir, Fighters on hot launch standby, at your command."

The ship rocked violently again, nearly throwing Barstow from his chair and sending sparks all over the bridge, "try it..you said you were the best, O'hara," John called as Sav executed maneuvers that nearly overloaded the inertial dampeners, "Cale, let me know when we've got everyone, and use every transporter we've got. We need to get out of here or we're all going to have a lot of voices in our heads...'

"Aye Sir. Llewellyn to all transporter rooms, everyone, I want all the people off the surface STAT! And for those of you who don't know what that means let me spell it out for you; it means I want them up here yesterday!" Cale said into his combadge. Checking his console, he monitored their progress and was pleased to see that they were all operating at peak efficiency. And after what seemed like an eternity to him, he was able to make the following report: "Captain, the transporter rooms report that everyone has been beamed aboard."

"Copy that," Barstow called as thhe ship rocked again, "get some distance between us and them!"

Sav called out, "Yes Sir, working on getting the planet between us and them." Sav initiated a roll and Z-Minus controls to get some space between the ship and the borg.

Miles holding on with a deathgrip on his his console almost shouts, "Captain, we need to move any non-essentials into the center of the ship so I can begin drawing power from the outer sections, before we all speak Borg, Sir!"

"I agree with Lieutenant O'Hara", Saren said, unsure as why O'Hara had been looking at him; it wasn't his idea. "I don't believe this is the time to use experimental tactics given the potential ramifications."

At that moment the view screen came alive and a Borg was on screen.

"We are the Borg", it said. "You have been found guilty of crimes against our Collective. You will be executed.
Surrender and the executions will be carried out with minimal pain and suffering."

"I am th' bes-" O'Hara's protest silenced itself in short order when the main screen kicked on. After the Borg finished, she simply said: "That's na normal..."

Miles adds his two cents, "Well shit." He starts messing with his console trying to find places he can take power from to throw at the sheilds...

"All right," Stephanie looked over at Saren. "I'll go dorsal, you go ventral. There's a decoupler in th' tool locker next t' th' main power junction f'r th' ventral phaser array. Make sure ya shut down th' plasma flow before ya decouple, and if don' align th' ion varience, ye'll blow out every EPS relay on th' deck." She stripped off her uniform jacket and draped it over the back of the Engineering station's chair, then affixed her combadge back on to her gold undershirt. "Captain, if we do this, we're gonna need t' take th' main phaser arrays offline for at least 3 minutes while we redirect the plasma flow." She pulled her crimson tresses up into a tight pony tail with practiced ease. "An' f'r th' record, I still think this is damned foolish, but I don' have another idea, so let's get it done." She strode purposefully toward the Turbolift.

Saren followed O'Hara, listening to her directions , still wondering why they were so worried about using the phasers when quantum torpedoes would most likely do the job, He nodded. He thought about telling her that he had been an engineer for ten years and didn't need quite so much instruction, but he figured it would just turn into a distraction that they didn't need. It would be a discussion for later.

"Not-" the CO started as panels blew out all over the bridge and the lights dimmed. The panel in the command chair armrest threw Barstows head into the tritanium barricade behind the command chairs and bounced his head off, throwing him unconscious to the deck.

Two First Responders stepped out of the turbolift. One headed over to Barstow and used a bioscanner to assess the CO then he pressed the comlink in his ear and said, "Fr 1 to MEDICAL. This is Henro. I have the CO with a headwound. He is currently unconscious. Vitals are within normal limits but left pupil is sluggish. Transport to Critical STAT," and a second later Barstow disappeared from the Bridge and Henro got to his feet...ready for his next patient.

Sav remained at station despite the mayhem of exploding panels about them. Someone had dropped the shields and transported the survivors from the planet before she got distance. Thus, the Borg took advantage of that and shot up the Merlin, and as Sav was immersed, she felt every shot. Outside, she did not notice the damage she took from the exploding panels, she only knew the damage the Merlin took from the weapons of the Borg.

=/\= Transport Room 2 =/\=

Riv materialized on the pad, bracing a civilian whose leg had been hurt down on the planet. He looked over at the transporter operator "Thanks" he said "We needed that, now can I get some help." A corpsman assigned to help in the transporter room ran up to Riv, bypassing the other marines and able bodied civilians to grab the colonist.

"Everyone off the pad, there's more down there!" Riv called, as corpsmen and marines helped clear the pad of everyone.

The transporter chief called over the crowd "Everyone to sickbay, SOP", as she started another round of beam outs.

Riv headed out with everyone else, moving toward the turbolift, heading toward sickbay. Riv rested a moment. Guess I'm not going to be getting my things from the barracks he though, smiling at the thought of the Borg playing with his whittling knife.

Several moments passed, and the turbolift opened, and just as everyone disembarked, the ship rocked, power went out, and everyone fell to their feet.

=/\=Transporter Room 4 =/\=

The Merlin shook as John appeared on the transporter pad. Someone was really crazy to do a transport in the middle of the fight. Looking around, he saw Jacobs and gave him a thumbs up.

John activated his team's comm channel and said, "All units, keep weapons down but at the ready. We are on someone else's command. We don't want to be mistaken for a bad guy. Assist with getting civilians to safe areas."

John started to walk out and said, "Closest turbolift, I need to get to the bridge."

The corpsman he was speaking with him said, "Sir, sorry SOP, you are going to sickbay. I am sure the Captain will speak to you after the ship isn't being shot at."

John glared at the corpsman and then nodded in surrendered and followed her to sickbay.

Kachiko watched the Marines depart, before looking at the transporter operator, "There's a lot more down there. I don't think that it's a good idea to bring them up until we are done fighting with the Borg."

Then she looked at the other Marines, "Redeploy to strategic locations aboard. We have to be ready to be boarded. I will be on the bridge."

=/\=Bridge =/\=

Feeling for his combadge Miles taps it then says, “This is Ops Chief Rejal, we need medical teams to the bridge NOW! All ops and engineering personnel get the engines up and running again, NOW!”

Stephanie had been waiting for the turbolift and had been spared the brunt of any explosions, But glass shrapnel from the consoles had imbeded itself in her bare arms, causing thin streams of blood to trail down. The ships phasers forgotten, she took up the emergency fire gear and began spraying one of the consoles that had some nasty greenish blue flames rising from it. After she had put it out, she looked over at the helm. "I think it's time t' get th' feck outta Dodge! I'll be in Engineerin'. Sarah needs me."

"You're not going anywhere until I get a look at those injuries," ENS Henro, the Medical First Responder said stepping between Stephanie and the turbolift. He took out his bioscanner and began to scan the sites of the impaled glass.

"Ensign O'Malley to Lieutenant O'Hara, reporting for duty, and also where do you need me?" Riv asked, realizing it wasn't the time to report in, and already heading to main engineering from where he was thrown on the way to sickbay.

Stephanie tapped her combadge and growled. "Standby. I'm busy."

"See here boyo," Stephanie fixed Henro with a glare that could have melted Andor's polar ice caps. "If I don' get this boat movin', me bein' injured won' matter a lick b'cause every last one o' us will be dead. See t' th' Capt'n. I'll be in pain when I've th' time f'r it." She was employing her normal tactic of attempting to steamroll people with the force of her personality. She figured that as long as she sounded like she knew what she was doing, the rest of the Galaxy would fall into line. She made an attempt to push past him to the lift.

"Not happening, Lieutenant," Henro said, firmly but compassionately. "Several of those pieces of glass are deeply embedded and one wrong move could cause one or more of them to sever an artery. It is my job to see that doesn't happen. Now you have a choice. You can either let me treat you here and now or I can send you to Sickbay."

Stephanie pushed past Henro and pressed the call button for the turbolift. "Then ya can enter a reprimand inta my service record... If we survive." The door slid open and she entered the turbolift without another word.

Once onboard, she tapped her combadge again. "O'Hara t' O'Malley," At least he's a good strong Irish name on him., she thought as she waited for acknowledgement.

"Awfully odd time f'r a crew reassignment. Report t' Main Engineerin'. I'll have a look at ya there. An' don' dawdle."

Miles keys his badge a second time and says, "Leena, if you're alive, get to the main transporter room, keep it running however you can, we have to save as many people as we can!" Unable to see from the amount of blood coming out of a gash on his head, Miles tries to sit up to breath better, which of course causes him to have a coughing fit...thinking to himself, 'I think something's not right in my chest,' he stops moving and relaxes as best he can against whats left of his console. He does draw his disruptor and has it hidden under his leg should any pesky Borg come along...

Jessica knelt down next to Miles and placed a surgical sponge on his head wound. "Easy, Lieutenant," she said as she, quickly, scanned his body. Reading the results on the small screen of the bioscanner she pressed the comlink in her ear and said, "FR Team 1 to Medical. This is James. I need STAT transport to a Surgical Suite for a pneumothorax and head lac. Pulse is 112, reps...65 and shallow. BP...60 over 40. Pupils are equal but sluggish." What only Jessica could hear was the "copy. Energizing," and a second later Miles disappeared from the Bridge and Jessica moved on to her next patient.

"Captain?! I need someone over here now. The captain's down. I want ALL damage control teams to get this ship up and running STAT!" Cale was feeling the pressure now. With the captain down and the ship dead in space, he was out of his element completely and totally. " "Scarlet, I want all security teams dispersed throughout the ship and ready for boarders! Keep phasers on rotating frequencies don't give them time to adapt. It may take them awhile in between shots but it should keep them alive a bit longer. Llewellyn to Marine teams, assist security it's time to earn your keep as well." Cale breathed a heavy sigh as he sat down in the center seat. Man, this new chair makes the bridge look a whole lot different! he thought to himself.

Sav ignored the mayhem on the bridge. She was now within the systems of the Merlin and working on bypassing injured systems to aux systems as a temporary patch to keep the Merlin operating. In the meantime, she used the air thrusters to maneuver the Merlin away from the borg ship. Any distance would help in preventing boarding parties.

=/\=Sickbay =/\=

"Incoming to ESB," came the announcement from the nurses' station. "Head lac and pneumothorax. Field report sent to bay's monitors."

Cara was gloving up as the field report appeared on the monitor above the surgical table. She was just about to comment when the Operations Chief appeared on the table. "Just relax, Lieutenant. We'll have you as good as new in no time," she said placing one hand on his shoulder to comfort him and with the other she lifted the surgical sponge to get a better look at his head laceration. "Get an infusion started and push fluids," she instructed the nurse. Then she glanced back at Michael and said, "lung or head?" and waited for him to make the call.

Truth be told Michael hated these situations he was a diagnostician and there was nothing here to diagnose. Everyone present knew the cause of the operations chief's wounds. Nevertheless it was his job to make the call. "I will take the head Cara, and you stabilize the pneumo..." He spoke in a monotone and set to work on the head lac, first he made sure that there was no actual brain trauma or skull fractures.

"Dr. Ki....the CO is in cubicle 3," came the announcement from the nurses' station. "His scans are on the cubicle's monitors."

Michael's right eyebrow raised in the Vulcan manner. It seemed that Barstow was injured. Michael did not want to abandon a patient, but he also did not trust anyone to take care of the Captain accept himself that is. "Cara I am going to need you to finish here and maintain control over all further triage. I will be with the Captain."

"Go, Michael. I've got this," Cara said and moved over to the side of the biobed. "Get me a chest tube tray," she instructed the nurse.

He nodded to Cara thankful that she understood the situation and he proceeded into cubicle 3.

=/\= Bridge =/\=

The turbolift hatch opened again and Commander Bayushi exited, a hand steadying herself against a bulkhead as the shields took another hard hit. Looking to the center seat, she was surprised to see Llewellyn. So she called out, "Status report!"

"Oh Commander, there you are! I was wondering exactly that myself but from what I've been able to discern we've arrived at the Vega Xu Colony, engaged the Borg, beamed up the colonists and we're dead in the water or space if you will. Barstow has been injured and is in Sickbay being cared for. So I suppose that leaves you in command. And I sure hope you're up for it because you're all we've got now," Cale breathed all that out in one breath trying to recover from the latest attack himself.

Morgan appeared, her holo-image staticy, "Life support is offline as well. Whoever's bright idea to lower shields to transport gave the Borg a clean shot," the ICOS said as she flickered on and off, "No wonder you were in space dock again, who's the ce oh, Bugs Bunny?"

"Computer, shut that thing off and prevent it from reactivating until called for," Cale said angrily He wasn't use to having his orders questioned by a hologram or an AI for that matter. Cale felt somewhat ashamed for giving the order to lower the shields to beam the rest of the colonists up after Morgan's scathing comment.

Given that the Captain had gone down and now the ship was mostly dead in the water, Saren went back to his station. He still had his panel active. He looked at the readings and then spoke.

"Commander, with our weapon power limited and the Borg shields still up, I have an idea that could defeat them", Saren said. "There is still power to the inertial dampener systems, which include the tractor beam. The Borg ship will not be out of the atmosphere for another 30 seconds, the tractor beam polarity can be reversed and they can be pushed back in to the surface of the planet."

"Do it, Lieutenant. We need all the help we can get," Cale responded quickly trying to recover from his revelry.

Sav heard the plan from the com link at Tactical. Her voice appeared from the Helm speaker as she responded, "Maneuvering the ship with thrusters and limited impulse for the tactic. Initiating."

=/\= Engineering =/\=

Seeing that the engineering crew was starting to get things under control Leena was thinking of what to do next when her combadge beeped, hearing her boss almost yell at her she muttered something aloud about pushy, obnoxious men and then responded back, "Yah, I'll there as soon as I can!" Leena grabs a spare repair kit and finds the fastest route to the main transporter, still muttering about how pushy her boss is...

Stephanie entered Main Engineering There was a great deal of activity going on. "LIZ!" She screamed "REPORT!"

MCPO Hale screamed to be heard over the din of the Engineering bay. "All propulsion systems are offline and so is life support!" She yelled back.

"Yer with me, Chief!" O'Hara said.

Liz rounded the corner and gaped at the sight of Stephanie. "What the Hell happened to you?"

"'Tis only a scratch," Stephanie said. "Looks way worse than it is. I'll have it seen to when we're na all about t' suffocate." She then found the main life support junction, pulled the cover off and the pair went to work.

=/\=Sick Bay Cubicle 3=/\=

Michael walked in and turned on all the scanning equipment. The Captain laid there on the biobed unconscious. "Nurse, report!" he ordered.

"Minor skull fracture and concussion," the Nurse replied.

=/\= Bridge =/\=

"Lieutenant, how is that coming along?" Kachiko looked back briefly, before returning her gaze to the main viewer, staring at the ascending Borg vessel.

Then there was a spectral shift, mostly green, on the screen as the Borg ship jumped to warp. Thus Kachiko muttered aloud, "Never mind that."

Sav was surprised as anyone else at the Borg Vessel just clearing the main atmosphere and jumping to warp while still in the main gravity well of the planet. That had to have done damage to the vessel, and the Merlin was wounded... so why? All she could figure out was that they had damaged the Borg Sensors with their attacks and the renegade Borg thought it prudent to get away from a vessel that still had Quantum Photon torpedoes at the ready to fire. With the Borg vessel gone, she ignored the bridge and fully immersed herself into the Merlin.

Kachiko's eyes turned to the replacement Operations Officer, since Rejal was in Sickbay, "Status report? What's working, what isn't and what do we need?"

Kachiko stood up and sighed, "Commander Llewellyn, you have the bridge. I'm going to be having a chat with Command."

"Aye Sir," Cale said as he switched his arm console to the overall bridge setting he programmed into it while still in drydock.

Saren was just about to press the tractor beam button when the Borg jumped to warp. He cocked his head to the side. He wondered why they left when they had the tactical upper hand. Then it became clear as the USS Agamemnon, an Excelsior class vessel, dropped out of warp and hailed the Merlin.

Kachiko reversed course as an Excelsior dropped out of warp. She looked to the replacement Operations Officer, "Bring them on-screen."

"Voice only, Commander, main viewer is not functioning properly," reported the Ops officer.

"Merlin," came a male voice."Can you hear us?"

"Aye, Agememnon. This is Commander Bayushi. Commander Barstow is in Sickbay at current. We could use some Engineering assistance as we're currently dead in the water and life support is down."

=/\= Sickbay =/\=

John waited in sickbay for a while as more wounded came in far more injured than him. He sat there quietly for a bit, letting the pain killer he had been given set in. Once it had, John carefully slid out of sickbay as more of the wounded were brought in.

=/\= Bridge =/\=

John came onto the bridge just as the Agamemnon showed up.

"That's a sight for sore eyes", he commented to no one in particular.
